Ginny arrived back at the Hall that evening to find Lewis and his parents having dinner in the pantry.

‘Sit down, dear, and I’ll get your dinner. It’s being kept warm in the oven.’ Fliss began to get to her feet, then sat down again as Ginny, peeling off her coat, said, ‘I’ll get it. I need to wash my hands anyway.’

‘Did you phone Angela Steele?’ she asked Lewis when she arrived back with her food.

‘Yes, we had a good chat. She’s delighted to know that she’s going to be able to work here – she says it’s going to be a terrific challenge and she was hoping to get the job. As we thought, she’s got a lot of work on hand at the moment and so the autumn suits her as well as us. She’s coming here on Friday to have another look at the place and talk things over with us. It helps me to feel that the better times are definitely on the horizon, when projects are completed and we’ve got more time for each other – time to think about you, me, and us.’ Then, as they went through the gates and turned to go down the hill leading to the village, ‘There’s still one big snag, though—’

Ginny squeezed his hand tightly. ‘I know – when are you going to find out what’s happening about Rowena Chloe? We can only wait, my love, and keep our fingers tightly crossed.’

‘You’re right. I’ve just got to keep on being patient, though it’s hard.’ They were walking down the side of the public house, only yards away from Kilmartin Crescent and the village green, and he paused, turning to take her in his arms and kiss her while they were still unseen by others.

‘To what do I owe that very pleasant pleasure?’ Ginny wanted to know when he released her.

‘Just
